Farmer of Year Arthur Rudman, wife survive farm attack, Blaauwkrantz, Uitenhage http://www.landbou.com/node/58175
Arthur Rudman, 66 and wife Trinette narrowly escaped death when they were attacked by 5 armed men at their farm Blaauwkrantz near Uitenhage on Sat 21:15 Nov 12 2011. Mr Rudman is well-known in international hunting circles and was elected as an East Farmer of the Year.
He is under treatment for the upper-leg/groin wound at the Nedcare Cuyler-hospital at Uitenhage. The bullet which just missed a main artery is still embedded in his groin. Their son Francois confirmed to Landbouweekblad that his parents were ambushed when returning to the homestead Saturday around 21:15. "My mother entered the house to unlock. The armed men confronted my father when he put the car into the garage. When he screamed to warn my mother, he was shot in the groin and then bashed over the head with gun-grip.”
The son believes his mother believed he was having a heart attack and when she stormed from the house, the thugs grabbed the Afrikaner woman by the hair and forced her back into the homestead. She was forced at gunpoint to open the registered gun-safe. They escaped with antique guns, jewellery and money. Mrs Rudman however managed to escape from them, locking herself in one of the rooms and calling her son and the police. "We have been expecting an attack for a long time, my parents were prepared. The fact that they remained so cool-headed probably saved their lives.' A R20,000 reward was offered for information which would lead to the arrests of the five attackers.
