Many friends rushed in to aid Labuschagne family

Even though their double-story home and their two vehicles suffered extensive fire damage from arson, the Labuschagne family of Fick Street, Parys know that their friends and neighbours are always ready to help…

PARYS, Free State. The Labuschagne-family of Fick Street in Parys had to suffer the trauma of being targetted by hijackers and the family ‘s life being endangered when their double-story home’s garage was torched during a breakin. Both events occurred at about 23:45 October 22 2011.  And due to the poor water-pressure in Parys, their attempts to douse the flames with a garden hose were useless.

According to journalist Liezl Scheepers, writing in the Parys Gazette, the first person to realise that the family was in danger was mom Hettie – she woke up because their Volkswagen combi’s alarm was activated inside the garage. “The next moment there were snapping sounds and then the flames.’ Their son Morney heard his mom screaming and saw a person run in front of his room on the gravel outside, running towards the back garden-gate. Morney ran outside to help douse the fire.

The family put in an emergency call to the fire department of Parys, and after four frantic phone calls forefighter ‘Paul’ arrived with a tanker-tender which didn’t carry enough water to douse the flames.  “It was far too late, and too little”, writes Scheepers. “The combi was completely burnt out and the Mercedes parked next to it was also burnt. The bank cards, Morney’s identity document and the money which were in the garage and inside the combi also were burned. The arsonists had accessed the garage by removing its door from its hatches. “

LABUSCHAGNE FAMILY FIRE AFTER BREAKIN CARA long list of helpers – friends, neighbours, security guards --  arrived to try and help the family combat the fire: Hennie van der Westhuizen, Tielie, Koos, Japie brits of CSS security, the people from Parys Sekuriteit, and Hesther van der Westhuizen who coordinated all the phone calls; Boet Smith and Ryno van Vuuren – who helped pumped water from the swimming pool.

Amidst all this tremendous damage it showed that the community can stand together and support each other,’ the journalist concludes.

We will kill you Boers…

We will kill you Boers… vicious attack has torn the Van Vuuren family of Jagersfontein’s lives apart

FREE STATE HIGH COURT, BLOEMFONTEIN. Oct 26 2011 - The Van Vuuren family of Jagersfontein's lives were torn apart by a nightmare attack inside their home on 21 March last year. A peaceful Sunday-evening in front of the TV erupted into an orgy of knife-stabbing and assaults with a spade targetting the men: two of whom are disabled and wheelchair-bound.

82-year-old Boet van Vuuren and his wife of 55 years, Francina, 76, never recovered from the horrific trauma of that night in Harrison Street: Francina died eight months later and Boet is stricken with grief over the loss of his beloved wife. Boet and his son Marius, both disabled and wheelchair-bound, were viciously mauled although totally defenceless, while Tienie van Vuuren’s attacker tried everything he could to stab out the Afrikaner’s eyes, the court was told yesterday. The hearing continues.

Van Vuuren family attacked in Jagersfontein 21 March 2010 tore their lives apart March 21 2010: The Van Vuuren family of Jagersfontein had their lives destroyed by a vicious black racist attack from men who shouted : we are going to kill you Boers”: from left: Marius, Jean, Tienie and Boet. Picture: Charl Devenish, Volksblad. Story: Mike van Rooyen.

The four Van Vuuren men told Volksblad of their horror-night after they had earlier told judge Corné van Zyl in the High Court about their ordeal: testifying against alleged attackers Molefu Ishmael Penethe, 27 and Lebohang Saul Jan (23), both of Jagersfontein on four charges of attempted murder, housebreaking and armed robbery.

Boet van Vuuren, disabled due to Guillain-Barre-sydrome, testified that he and son Marius, disabled after a car-accident, were watching a religious programme in the old man's bedroom when they heard Francina screaming. The next moment Penethe stormed into their room; turned over beds; followed shortly thereafter by 'a taller man' who turned Marius over in his wheelchair while Penethe was assaulted the disabled man with a garden-spade. Marius was defenceless, on the floor, trying to ward off the blows with an arm.
The old man testified: "pretend to be dead. These people are here to kill us,' he whispered to his son.Penethe held a knife against the old Afrikaner's throat, threatening to kill him if he did not give him money. Penethe then opened the family safe and took cash from it. At that point Tienie van Vuuren entered the bedroom - and was immediately attacked. Tienie fell down bleeding: and it looked as if he was choking from his own blood: his eyes were closed up by the blood. The old man begged the black attackers to take anything but please not hurt his wife. "I was married happily for 55 years. Then I was pushed into the soil by fate. I lost my wife,' he testified.

We will kill you, you Boers:

Marius testified that as Penethe came storming in he said: "We will kill you, you Boers.' Penethe then hit Marius' arm, injuring it gravely with a garden spade. Marius also identified the second attacker as the other accused, Lebohang Saul Jan, 23.

Tienie testified that Penethe had tried to stab out his eyes with a knife. He suffered bleeding on the brain afterwards and cuts to his eyelids.

"I want justice done. It feels as if it happened yesterday, even though it happened last year. Nobody can bring back my mom. I am happy the case is coming to an end now so that my heart can rest,' he told Volksblad. He said about his attacker Penethe: "I will never, ever forget his face. That's the person who ruined our lives.'

The hearing continues. Adv. Sandile Mthethwa is the State-prosecutor. Adv. Oupa Makhene and attorney Mrs Leona Smit represents the two accused.

The young black male stone-thrower ‘was previously unknown to the two Afrikaner men when he accosted Ugie Coetzer en his colleague Tallie Gouws at 9:30am in Nkanen township near Rustenburg. The two Afrikaners who were selling funeral policies, were waiting for a client inside  Gouws’ car.

"A lightbrown VW Golf stopped next to us and we heard someone whistle. The man in the NUMSA-t shirt climbed from the car. e screamed in Afrikaans: "What are you shts doing here.' Then he turned a blue shirt around his head and started looking for stones. We didn't know whether to pray or what'. The man then reportedly shouted at them in English: 'we are Malema's people.' Then he switched to Afrikaans when he cursed us and said we must fkff."

Coetzer said he then asked the man in Xhosa why he was cursing them. 'He replied: 'you Boers are going to sht.' Then he cut lose with stones at the windshield and yelled, 'this is for you Boers.' He continuously cursed and threw stones. It was blatantly racist. We thought he was going to stone us to death'.

Coetzer sustained cuts to his back when he turned away when the car-window next to him shattered, and a stone also struck him. Coetzer and Gouws then chased off.Gouws' citygolf sustained R7,500's worth of damage with amongst others, shattered windows and windshield. He lodged a formal charge with the police.

The 'incident' was immediately 'condemned' by the National Union of Municipal workers' organiser Mere Boase in Rustenburg.
"Our members must be discliplined. And if someone wears a Numsa-t shirt it does not make him a member. Such shirts are also handed to non-members'.The civil-rights initiative Afriforum's investigator Nantes Kelder however pointed out that 'this incident proves that ANC youth leader Julius Malema must accept responsibility for his utterances because people can interpret it in such a way that they lead to such violent incidents'.
