Crimes Sept 3 2011 farmitracker

Editor Anna-Marie van Noordwijk, 53, of Harrismith Chronicle, survives facial shotgun-blasts in farm-attack

2011-09-02 As reported by Volksblad journalist Pieter Steyn, two farm-attacker described as 'sheep-rustlers' shot the editor of the Harrismith Chronicle, Anna-Marie van Noordwijk, 53, in the face and chest from outside her homestead.
The attack occurred at 23.30 on Thursday Sept 1 2011. Her daughter Leanni told Volksblad that her mother yelled at the dogs - barking fiercely - to shut up and had opened the backdoor when she was shot. Her daughter found her bleeding at the backdoor. "The thieves were busy at the sheep-pen and it's likely they thought it was my father who was coming out of the door,' the teenager said. Her father Nico was away from the farm at work, she said. "Me and my little brother tried to help mom and phoned my friend and the police', she said. It's not clear that anything was stolen or rustled nor what happened to the attackers. Mrs Van Noordwijk was taken to the Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein by her husband after she was initially treated at a Harrismith hospital."My wife's face is terribly swolen but she is alert. She will probably undergo surgery on Tuesday at the Universitas-Hospital,' he said.SAPS spokesman sergeant  Mmako Mophiring, said an attempted-murder docket was opened. His contact number is 058-624-1000.

2011-09-02 As has only become known on Sept 2 2011, North West farmer Pieter Lewis, 67 of the Enkelbos road region near Koster, was seriously injured while fighting a veld fire on his tractor.
He was with other farmers when the wind turned and the flames headed for Lewis, said his wife, Martie in an interview with Beeld journalist Susan Cilliers."the smoke and flames headed for him, he jumped off the tractor but knew he would not get away: so he rolled up into a ball, putting his head between his knees while riding the tractor from the flames'. Mr Lewis sustained third-degree burn wounds over 20 percent of his body: especially his head, face, arms and hands. His lungs also sustained damage. He has for the past ten days been under sedation in Milpark Hospital Johannesburg's intensive-care unit. "His situation still is critical,' said Mrs Lewis. He has already been to an operating theatre to clean the burn-wounds and for skin-transplations.He has deep burn-wounds especially to his right arm, has an infection and high fever. His sugar-levels and blood-pressure are on a roller-coaster ride.” A farm-foreman meanwhile manages the cattle-farm and a prayer page was created on Facebook for him.Beeld reports that the NorthWest veld fires destroyed .at least 286,600 hectares of grazing land and 100,000 in the Free State.  Killed were Mr Ian Vosloo, 45, two farm workers named as Shadrock Moeto and Nsakisan. Agri-North West is trying get the ANC-regime to declare some regions where the fires raged, declared emergency areas. It is hoped that the farmers who have lost thousands of heads of livestock and saw  their crops destroyed, would then qualify for compensation from the State so that they can continue farming.

Picture right: Amelia Henning’s convicted murderers Thabo Mokoena, 18, left and Lucky Nkgwedi, 19: sentenced to life: Mrs Henning sustained 34 knife-wounds and Mokoena had cut out her eyes.

Mrs Justice Kubushi wiped the floor with the two convicted murderers Thabo Mokoena, 18, Lucky Nkgwedi, 19,’s gruesome, atrocious behaviour towards the white police reservist. After they had stabbed her repeatedly in the left-chest, they also cut out her eyes while she was 'already laying still,' she said in the judgment-summary.  Mrs Kubushi: "Why would they then try to remove her eyes? While it was his comrade Thabo Mokoena who did it, the other witnessed this." She ruled that Nkgwedi's 'youthful age”(18) and the fact that he was a first-offended is a factor" and sentenced him to 25 effective years in prison.  Kubushi: "Mrs Henning must have been traumatised and frantic with fear when she struggled and screamed when she was dragged through the veld near  Pasteur Drive in Hospital Park - where she was gang-raped and then murdered. "And then you lost her half-naked and walked away as if nothing had happened,' she summarised. "The violence used against Mrs Henning was cruel. She was stabbed 34 times.' The murdered woman's sister, SAPS lt-col Hannelie Duvenhage of Bloemfontein, testified to the permanent trauma which the family endured, said the judge."To receive the message of death is not pleasant and then to hear that your  was raped and murdered, is horrific.” She noted that the murdered woman's mother, her sister and her two children needed trauma-councilling from medical experts - and that the horrific shock also badly affected the health of her other two sisters.  The judge quoted from Lt.Col's Duvenhage's testimony: "the fact that I had to bring the message was very bad for me. I laid awake many nights and cry myself to sleep.' Her children and husbands also suffer from Mrs Henning's loss. Judge Kubushi quoted from their testimony: 'The two murderers' families can still see them in prison. We will never spend Christmas together or celebrate her birthday. They have silenced her.'   Duvenhage testified that she will never be able to forgive the murderers for what they had done to her sister. Advocate Silas Chalale appeared for the state-prosecution. The defence was handled by adv Kenny Pretorius.
