Dutch weekly Elsevier highlights anti-Boer violence in SA

Malema calls for confiscation of all Boer farms. Yet blacks leave the countryside enmasse for the cities: there’s little interest amongst blacks in farming, notes Dutch journalist…

MALEMA brought his body guards with their AK47s inside the Equality Court at his hatespeech trial DID NOT GET ARRESTEDJournalist Fred de Vries highlights the black-racist violence targetting Afrikaners in South Africa in this week’s Dutch weekly magazine Elsevier.nl. He writes  that the anti-Boer violence and massive invasions of white-owned land by black squatters are causing an exodus -- and growing unrest amongst whites. “Many farmers feel intimidated by the massive land-occupations by black squatters,’ De Vries notes, adding: “It is black racism’. He sounds a critical note about SA president Jacob Zuma’s total silence about his youth league leader Julius Malema’s constant, public incitements to kill the Boers, and Malema’s calls to confiscate all the Boer farms without compensation. Yet there’s ‘very little interest in farming amongst blacks,’ noted de Vries, quoting Afrikaner farmer Daan Pretorius of the farm Modderfontein, next to Grootvlei.

‘ Foreign investors are growing weary…’

De Vries quotes Bennie van Zyl, the president of the 6,000-member Transvaal Agricultural Union, as saying that ‘the farmers are reaching breaking point: they are ready to leave, and others are ready to fight back, the ‘bittereinders’. De Vries notes the large number of applications for emigration visa for New Zealand and Australia. And ‘foreign investors are growing weary’, he writes. “Afrikaner farmers are popular everywhere. The cooperative Agri-SA has requests from 23 African countries who offer land to the Afrikaner farmers. Hundreds of farmers have already relocated to Mozambique. Zambia, Botswana, Congo and even Egypt. Others are taking up offers for land in Georgia. But the majority of Boers are waiting resignedly for things to come. Daan Pretorius signed a contract with a Zambian Minister but seven years later he was back: disillusioned and cheated too many times. Pretorius’ farm Modderfontein is right next to the town of Grootvlei, about 100km east of Johannesburg. It’s hardly pittoresque: the house dates from the seventies; its view it dominated by the condensation from the nearby power station’s cooling towers. Pretorius has managed to obtain 1,200 hectares of land to create a viable farm in this semi-arid region. He only has eight of his 23 original workers left and each one is paid more than the required monthly minimum wage of 140 Euros a month. “The workers moved out of the rural areas to townships, mostly Zulus and Sothos, in search of a ‘better life for all’ the ANC was promising them,’ he said. The animo for working on farms is low.” This is a brief summary of the article reproduced below. http://www.elsevier.nl

Bruno van Staden, 66, murdered, smallholder

‘The five-member black male gang also robbed 2 black workers at the smallholding next door: but dropped the robbed jewellery when they fled…’

July 21 2011 – PRETORIA. Mr Bruno van Staden, 66, was shot dead with four shots to his body in his bedroom at his Kameeldrift smallholding at 7.30pm. The pensioner’s wife Alexis, 55, was ordered at gunpoint to get out of the bathtub. She apparently remained unscathed.

Hilda Fourie of Beeld quotes lt-col Lungelo Dlamini as saying that the same five-man gang probably also attacked a gardener and a maid in the smallholding next door earlier in the day. This five-member gang ‘must have dropped the robbed jewellery as they fled,’ said Dlamini. ‘They’d tied up the black workers in the cooling room’.

The Van Staden couple’s son-in-law Johan Lamprecht said they live in a flat on the smallholding. Their son Bruno and their grandson Juan-Gé Lamprecht also have seperate cottages nearby. At around 7.30pm someone knocked at the front door and Mr Van Staden opened it. A black man stood there pointing a gun at his face. It’s not entirely clear what happened next -  but the Afrikaner pensioner then was then shot dead with four shots in the upper body – at close range.

“It all happened in front of my mother-in-law. She saw it happen”. Their loot: two cellphones and Mr van Staden’s firearm… http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Bende-van-5-skiet-man-20110721

2011-07-21 2 The fact that 75-year-old Ventersdorp farmer Koos Conroy was shot in the neck, and that his wife’s cellphone, money and the gun he was shot with were found buried beneath a tree afterwards, does not deter the Afrikaans news media from describing this extraordinary attack in the Afrikaner farmer as 'just another robbery'.

The neckshot didn't however kill Conroy: he sustained flesh-wounds and also was treated for a cut to his hand - and was back home again the same day, 'virtually uninjured', writes Beeld.

‘Bible fell open on psalm…about God’s grace protecting you’

A relative of the elderly couple, Mrs Jeanette Steyn, who owns the local Ventersdorp newspaper, Nuus@Ventersdorp, said Conroy was reading his Bible as he always did before inspecting his lifestock.
"The Bible fell open on a psalm which read that 'nothing will happen to you as long as God's grace is with you.'

They jammed open her silver jewellery box and threw her pearls into her face…

The black men waited until Mr Conroy had stepped outside to inspect his cattle at 7am – and then attacked his 70-year-old wife Frances.  They mandhandled her and shoved her around, demanding to know ‘where their safe was”. The Conroys do not have a safe. However the black attackers did not seem to believe her -- because they kept shoving her around and threatening her. She then handed her silver jewellery box with jewels,' said Ms Kleyn. "They bent open the silver jewellery box, took her pearls, threw them into her face and said they demanded that she show them the safe'.They tied her up while waiting for her husband to return to the homestead - and plucked him roughly from his bakkie. One had a knife, the other a revolver.

"While my uncle tried to stop them his hand was cut by the knifeman. Then they shot him in the neck', she said.

Just like that they shot the unarmed, elderly man. The injured farmer then was tied up and the elderly white couple's mouths were taped up. Then something extraordinary happened: two family members unexpectedly showed up in their vehicles - and these brave five black comrades took to their heels. "My nephews showed up. They chased the gang in their bakkie but they got stuck in the mud. The attackers got away.Police showed up with helicopters and dogs to search for the five men. During the search they discovered Mrs Conroy's cellphone buried beneath a tree: they heard it ringing.
Together with the cellphone was the pistol Mr Conroy had been shot with. They found a bag with about R500 in silver coins hanging on a wire and clothing scattered in the veld.' The incident was confirmed by SAPS sergeant Karen Tredoux. A docket of attempted murder and armed robbery was opened.
