ANC-regime evicts Boksburg homeless

Homeless people evicted by ANC-authorities from Boksburg rescue centre

The ANC-run Boksburg authority was helped by police to forcibly evict some 70 homeless people from the 'People's Rescue Centre' at 39 Market Street, a 100-year-old building without electricity.

Local journalist Fanie Mthupha wrote on July 6 2011 that the authorities claimed it was 'unsafe, vulnerable to fire-accidents because it has no electricity.' Many of the evicted residents said they felt 'uncomfortable' about going to a temporary shelter run by pastor Stephen du Plessis at New Beginnings – which was the ‘alternative accommodation’ with the Boksburg municipality claimed they should go to.  They offered no permanent alternative accommodation for any of these people, however, although this is required by law.

The Boksburg authorities moved these vulnerable people in the middle of the winter because they plan to tear down the building and ‘use it for something else like offices.’ they told Mthupha. The forced eviction started very early in the morning, with hired black guards in red overalls, referred to as the 'Red Ants', protected by local and national police, moving the people's few belongings. “ It was all done 'according to law', the Boksburg authorities told Mthupha.
