Cop critically injured: violent land occupation by 5500 black/coloured squatters, Tafelsig, Cape Town
2011-05-15 Mitchells Plain - Policing-forces fired rubber bullets AT some 5,500  people who --  in an organised two-pronged land occupation -  have started occupying 18-hectares of land in the suburb of Tafelsig next to the Swartklip sports fields; and also are moving into the Wolfgat nature reserve.

TAFELSIG LAND OCCUPATIONS 5500 SQUATTERS ON COP CRITICAL May142011 A 37-year-old police officer was shot in the neck early on Saturday-morning on the besieged Swartklip Road by three unknown men.
The bullet exited from his left eye said SAPS capt Mugelaine van der Vent. The police officer is in critical condition in hospital. Anyone who knows more about the men who fired the shot are asked to contact warrant/officerPieter Joubert at 00213701600.

Die Burger journalist and photographer had to flee at around 4:30pm when a hail of big stones rained down on the police and the news media. The estimated 5,500 land-occupiers -- who all had lived in shacks in the crowded backyards of relatives for years  occupied the terrain with demands that they would not leave until the city gives them  housing. At the same time another large group of squatters also attempted to occupy the Wolfgat nature reservice next to the Kapteinsklip-Station in New Tafelsig, Mitchell's Plain.
The squatters were pegging out sites to erect their shacks on when metropolitan police moved in and overturned the shacks and confiscated their building materials. At Swartklip the squatters occupying the 18-hectares land-site dug a deep trench at the entrance of Swartklip Road to block police cars. Organiser of the 'coloured' squatter community, Mr Terence Hosking, said the public land is 'unused' saying he would 'lead his people to the promised land'.  "The ANC-regime has money to buy firearms worth R40million but they can't build houses for us,  he said. Cape Town spokeswoman Kyle Hatton confirmed that the police and metro-cops used rubber bullets and water-cannon. The city 's duty is to protect its land from illegal occupation and we do this under the terms of our ownership-rights. "We acknowledge that there is a housing-emergency but we can't allow people to build illegal structures on illegally-occupied land'.

Welkom businessman beaten by 2 men: victim arrested for firing self-defence-shots

2011-05-16 WELKOM. An unnamed businessman was arrested Friday-morning after he fired his gun in self-defence towards three black men who were assaulting him in the industrial area - and in the process had damaged a passing car...
(source: Marisa Phillips) SAPS sergeant Puleng Motsoeneng said the unidentified businessman, 58, 'will appear on a charge of attempted murder' and his legal firearm was confiscated'. The businessman had apparently contacted two men a day earlier asking them if they had goods to transport: he earns extra by transporting items in his panel-van. He said when he delivered the items, the men accused him of 'stealing pipes' and threatened to assault him. The next day Friday, he was busy offloading items in Tenth Street in the industrial area when he was spotted by two men who assaulted him and tried to damage his van. He climbed out and the men threw him with stones and punched him. The businessman said he felt so threatened that he pulled out his firearm and fired warning shots to scare the men away. They ran away. However a bullet penetrated a passing vehicle with two occupants and the police decided that he should be arrested for 'attempted murder'.  The assaulted businessman also was injured: his face was damaged and he lost two teeth punched out by his assailants. Police asked any witnesses to this event to contact them at 057-391-6211 or Stop Crime number 08600-10111. - Volksblad
