Boer-gunsmith Kobus de Vries Jan212011 dead in KZN SAPS siege
KwaZulu-Natal farmer Kobus de Vries, 54 -- a skilled gunsmith with a large, legal gun-collection -- was shot dead during a nearly five-hour stand-off with a police force on his Babanango, North Zululand farm. Police claim he committed suicide. His family has appointed private detectives and a pathologist to establish the truth.

The cops describe a scene in which an angered Boer gunsmith, holding a ‘bottle of liquid in his hand’ and with a large (legal) gun-supply in his homestead, had ‘committed suicide during a police standoff.’ However the family are bringing private investigators and forensic experts to the crime scene, as there is considerable evidence that things didn’t happen this way.
A witness-worker and the family instead say that the police had him under siege for four-and-a-half hours, and that they had shot De Vries in the back after using a worker to lure him outside with a false promise that he would not be hurt – and that the Boer then was shot in the back when he tried to flee back into his homestead when the cops started shooting.
The cops claimed they had gone to the farm because De Vries had rammed two Eskom vehicles with his car as he was returning to his homestead from the airport – but the family says his car shows only a minor scratch. In short, the police story is full of holes.

It’s important to note that Kobus de Vries was a wealthy man who also was a skilled gunsmith with 19 legally-registered firearms in his possession.

Police spokesman Brig Ms Phindile Radebe claimed police was dispatched to the Boer’s homestead to 'follow up on reports that he had been involved in altercations and minor accidents with ESKOM workers.' De Vries, she claimed, was unhappy about the 'constant power black-outs on his farm' and had 'rammed several ESKOM trucks with his car." She also implied that De Vries was drunk: 'he was seen with a bottle of liquid in his hand.” She 'could not prove that he had been drunk'…
The Boer 's family are up in arms about the police's version of events. He was shot in the neck on the same day on which the fugitive French couple Dr Phillipe and Agnes Deniere had also died while under siege by 85 cops on a Sutherland farm - ‘found dead in a bullet-riddled farm cottage’ . The police also implied in this case that they ‘may have committed suicide’… The top-educated French couple had fled after they shot dead a young student-constable and injured another one when police tried to confiscate their legal weapons-cache, wrote Jacques Steenkamp of Beeld and Lloyd Burnard of The Witness.
Private pathologist, two private detectives to investigate the De Vries crime-scene
Just before he died, De Vries was returning from Durban airport after dropping off his wife, Rentia, described as his childhood sweetheart, but whom he only married last year. Family spokesman Thinus de Vries said that members of the family, including Rentia, will be visiting the farm Monday with two private detectives and a private pathologist to begin their own investigation into what really happened.
The police version is as follows: 'Police went to the farm, but," Radebe said, "before they even got out of the van they came under fire from the house and were forced to call for back-up. … the officers couldn’t move and one of the police vans was damaged from (sic) the gunfire”. Radebe claimed that De Vries “used a shotgun as well as a .303 rifle”.
However the police version is not what really happened, says De Vries' family. "There was just a very small scrape on his car, which does not tally with the cops' claims that De Vries had rammed two ESKOM trucks enroute to his farm. They also questioned the cops' claim that the Boer had 'committed suicide'.
Said his uncle Phillip van Vuuren, 83: "Kobus was 'shot by a police bullet in the back while he was attempting to run back into his house. A worker was asked to convince him to come out with the promise that the police would not shoot if he surrendered,” explained Van Vuuren. When the farm worker walked out with De Vries the police apparently started firing and he tried to run back inside.
The idea of suicide was further expelled by family spokesman Thinus de Vries. “He was very rich and very happy; he would never commit suicide,” he said. An inquest has been opened into the cause of death.
