Does ABSA syphon money from clients' accounts to sponsor sport?

"This is how our money is stolen" claims Emmarentia Olivier, who works in the catering department of the golfing estate Sanlameer on the KZN south coast. Her email is  catering@sanlameer.co.za  - and she wrote in an email sent to her friends:

"Here we go again: now ABSA bank wants to select the Springbok rugby players. I am an ABSA client myself and have been talking to them and the police with one question: where does ABSA get the money to sponsor soccer, rugby Curry-Cup and now the Springboks? I caught ABSA out in a small transaction. On 3 September, ABSA deducted R19,50 from my bank account which they said was earmarked for "ABSA REWARDS".
I contacted them to find out exactly where I ever gave them permission for this. Their reply: I was purportedly approached in May  2010 by a telemarketer and I 'gave permission'. I did NO SUCH THING. Then when I confronted them about this, I received an SMS:

  • "Dear Mr? You have been deregistered from Absa Rewards program..."

Olivier writes: "Work it out for yourselves: R19,50 paid by 1-million clients -- who never gave permission -- equals R19,500,000m a month. Multiply this by twelve and that's R234,000.000m a year. That's how we ordinary citizens are conned out of our money.
This must be fraud - and that's where they get those millions for sponsorships.

"And then ABSA has the nerve to prescribe the race of playes in the Springbok team..  how much longer are we going to allow our sporting events to be undermined like this?
How much longer are we going to allow our traditions be trampled underfoot by placing people in posts only based on their skin colour? We must stand up and fight for our rugby pride.Check out your own bank statements and see who else is being defrauded. Is there any police-officer or judicial expert willing to take on this care on our behalf, please?"

Police found 'very fat sheep with ear tag' underneath the bed in Rietfontein squatter camp

Monday 27 September 2010 By Cynthia Dreyer Madibeng Pulse - Hartbeespoort police followed the aroma to a sheep braai and found two men sitting in front of a shack with a lamb on the spit on the fire and beers in hand.

  • While two men sat in front of their braai in Ten Rooms squatter camp at the weekend relishing newly roasted lamb, police investigated inside their shack only to find another sheep, this time live and “very fat” kept under the bed. One wonders how long the sheep would have had to stay there, hidden from prying eyes and no doubt hungry mouths had it not been for the police!

Even if the sheep was hidden, there’s no way the thieves could have disguised the smell of deliciously roasting meat wafting in the air from neighbours or the police. The sheep had a yellow tag on its ear, and police are hoping that the owner will come forward and claim the animal. Police had to ride around with the sheep in a police vehicle until they could take it to the Hartbeespoort Animal Welfare and from there it was taken to Makalani.

The search operation which took place from about 03:00 on Friday morning by 55 members of staff using 15 vehicles and a helicopter netted 29 suspects. Ten Rooms informal settlement was targeted and then Marius camp. Of those arrested, 19 were illegal immigrants, three were selling liquor at shebeens, four were in possession of possible stolen goods and two were arrested for common robbery.

  • Mr Romano van der Spuy, vice Chairman of the Hartbeespoort Community Policing Forum, told MadibengPulse that when police arrived at Marius, it was already light and some of the illegals ran away from the helicopter, but were captured by police. Many illegal minors were taken to the police station but released without being charged.
  • Police were also able to gain entry to a Rietfontein plot with a search warrant where stolen goods are suspected of being stored. They recovered laptops and computers and made arrests.
