Striking “civil servants’ leave hundreds of psychiatric patients locked in over the weekend -- without any food, medicines or supervision…

2010-08-24  Dries Liebenberg reports from Durban: Two large, aggressive striker-gangs showed up at the Fort Napier psychiatric hospital on Friday - and beat the kitchen personnel with whips. No nurses were on duty and patients did not get food nor medication all weekend. Left without supervision, three psychiatric patients managed to escape from the Townhill hospital. More than 300  patients in high-intensity care units, mostly recovering after surgery, have had to be urgently moved to private hospitals because they were abandoned by their medical staff. Striking public ‘servants’ also ordered the fire-hydrants opened up to flood the Grey Hospital in Pietermaritzburg several times, said KwaZulu-Natal preier Dr Zweli Mkhize yesterday. For the past two weeks, only two provincial hospitals still had a handful of doctors report for duty.  The SADF sent 72 medical orderlies to Durban hospitals to try and help the patients. Amidst widespread assaults and intimidation, there has not been one nurse daring to report to the Stanger- and the Mahatma Gandhi-memorial hospitals since August 12… An army of unpaid volunteers has rushed in to help at all the KZN-hospitals, giving the wards thorough, badly-needed cleaning and preparing the food. In KZN province alone, more than 2,5-million pupils were ‘affected by the strike’, said Mkhize. http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Psigiatriese-pasiente-sonder-kos-toesig-gelos-20100824

Standerton Hospital ward’s seriously ill patients rushed to private house: public servant  strikers threw them out…
2010-08-24 Standerton – A private home in Standerton has been hastily equipped to serve as a hospital ward after striking workers threatened to throw seriously ill patients out of the local state hospital. The protesters arrived at the hospital on Saturday morning and gave staff until just after midday to remove all the patients, said Pieter van der Westhuizen, owner of Jeria trauma care and ambulance service.“At least we were able to convince the protesters to give us time until 15:00.” The house in Paarl Street belongs to Van der Westhuizen and is currently being used by the Generation Changers church as a place of ministry. With the help of private organisations and nursing staff who are not participating in the strike, Van der Westhuizen’s ambulance service moved 13 patients to the house.“We were forced to smuggle beds, medication and other equipment from the hospital so that we could equip the house properly.”The only wards which are still open at the Standerton hospital are the maternity and paediatric wards. However, protesters threatened on Monday afternoon that these wards will also have to be closed by Tuesday afternoon.http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Ward-moves-to-private-house-20100823

His family had to rescue him, and rushed the urine- and faeces soaked, dehydrated patient to a private hospital just in time.  http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/While-they-strike-people-die-20100823 Also, while the government has announced with much fanfare that they deployed members of the SADF-medical service, no troops will be patrolling the state hospitals to prevent any violence nor to protect patients: http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Soldiers-deployed-at-37-hospitals-20100823 KZN hospitals blocked Monday, worker’s car burnt:  On Monday August 23, 2010 - A car was burnt and the Mangosuthu Highway in Umlazi in KZN – the access road to a local public hospital – was blocked off with a fridge and car-wrecks. They only allowed entry to people who wanted to collect antiretroviral drugs… Thousands of Afrikaners pupils terrified by threatening, foot-stomping, screaming and aggressive strikers: August 23 2010 - Parys, Free State. South Africa. On Friday, scores of Afrikaans schools were attacked by large, aggressive groups of strikers. One of the worst attacks was fought off by angry parents at the HF Verwoerd Primary School in Bloemfontein, who were waiting and organised to wage battle who were protecting their young children, terrified and crying in their classrooms inside. Fists were flying, reports Volksblad. “Auntie we were very scared and sang songs for our dear Jesus so that He can come and help us,’ said eight-year-old Laetitia van Zyl, her eyes red from crying. “Of my friends were more frightened than I was. They cried more. We tried to sing louder than the bad people, but we were very, very scared..’ A large number of Afrikaans schools were attacked last week, and by Monday, many parents were keeping their children at home while others organised protection-units and took the children to school in ordinary street clothes to prevent them being attacked on the streets by the large, rolling masses of ‘striking’ government workers running through the streets… http://www.nuus24.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Vuiste-klap-glo-toe-stakende-onnies-mas-vat-20100819 Natalspruit Hospital: six patients die including two newborns - denied food, water, care: The most inhumane incident reported last week was the attack and siege of Natalspruit Hospital – where two newborn infants and four critically-ill pregnant women died because the strikers refused doctors and nurses any access to the wards to treat their patients. The newborns were denied nutrition for 48 hours and died slowly and horribly: of hunger and dehydration. Only by Monday, did the health minister Motsoaledi ‘intervene’ – by merely issuing a media statement, in which he said it was ‘murder’ to deny critical health care. However he did not order the SAPS to arrest the strikers who had denied health-care to these patients, nor did he lodge criminal charges. The civil-rights initiative Afriforum was first in line to obtain an urgent interdict on Friday -- to stop the strikers from attacking patients and school children – and only on Sunday did the government obtain an interdict from the Labour Court - prohibiting any ‘essential service workers” from striking – which it was seen on Monday, was ignored by strikers. http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71627?oid=194560&sn=Detail&pid=71616 The strikers even barged into the operating theatres and prevented doctors and nurses from continuing surgery in progress: some doctors and nurses risked their lives by crawling underneath fences to sneak into hospitals last week to treat emergency room patients: in one notable event at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, a patient was denied emergency care for a hacked-off hand, bleeding copiously. - http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71627?oid=194559&sn=Detail&pid=71616  -   http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Hospitals-turn-away-man-with-chopped-off-hand-20100820

THESE TEACHERS VOTED FOR THESE INHUMANE ‘ROLLING PROTEST ACTIONS:” sadtu_banner2
Above, these teachers don’t look all that happy after they nearly unanimously voted to strike ‘indefinitely’- a vote which the SA Communist Party wholeheartedly supported in their press statement on August 22: quote: “the SACP has consistently indicated its support for what we regard as a legitimate struggle for a living wage in the wider context of the struggle for decent work. The SACP also fully agrees with our comrades in COSATU that the wage gap between upper echelons, on the one hand, and the majority of workers, on the other, in the public sector (as in the private sector) is unjustified and unjustifiable. The SACP also fully agrees with COSATU statements that, in the course of exercising their legitimate right to strike and to picket, workers must avoid any acts of violence and physical intimidation… and much, much more of the same blather : http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page72308?oid=194562&sn=Marketingweb+detail&pid=90389

Strike ‘will become increasingly violent and last at least six weeks’ - labour analyst expert Andrew Levy… As many tens of thousands of demonstrating public ‘servants’ and criminal gangs running with the rioters caused chaos around the country this week, and even waged civil war on newborn infants and critically injured patients in hospitals and Afrikaans children in primary and high schools, labour analyst Andrew Levy predicts the strike ‘would last for four to six weeks and could become increasingly violent’.  Full Story...
