New SA crime-tracking website uses GPS-technology

July 31 2010 – ROODEPOORT. Johan Meyer reports that a free new website uses GPS-technology to track the latest crimes,  ‘and is making waves on the West Rand and countrywide’. The website Farmitracker.com, was established by a group of private people to create a platform for the community to report on crime.

Farmitracker Crime Maps Whites on Farms_May12010_July232010“We have been fighting a losing battle with our government regarding the release of crime statistics,’ said co-creator, Constantia Kloof resident Pieter Oosthuizen. “The police are not allowed to release (the latest) crime stastistics, so no-one at any one time knows the real situation that we, as citizens, have to face on a day-to-day basis. The idea is to give people a more accurate picture of what’s going on in their neighbourhoods, and even the country.’

GPS-technology

“The website incorporates Global Positioning System technology and so it shows you a map of your area and the crimes reported in your area,’ he said. The fact that the latest crime-statistics are not readily available means that the viewpoint of the community can be easily manipulated into believing that ‘everything is fine’,  when really it is not, he pointed out.“If you cut off someone’s sources of information you can literally choose what information you want to release. People form views on the information that’s available to them and I’m afraid that with (the latest SAPS-) crime statistics being unavailable to the public, they are forming the wrong picture of their surroundings’.

Farmitracker Publicity Roodepoort July 31 2010 Pieter Oosthuizen interview The latest available crime-statistics from the SA Police Service date from before March 2009.

Oosthuizen says that the (free) website is still undergoing some changes and that soon, residents will be able to list municipal problems like street lights and leaking drains that have not been attended to, in addition to crime.“It is of vital importance to share information. If you walk past a river and there is a huge crocodile on the riverbank - you have to warn your friends and family to take a different path.  This is the same concept…’ For more information on http://www.farmitracker.com visit the website or email Pieter at farmitracker@gmail.com

Democratic Alliance - bid to put Cape Town’s latest crime stats online

July 26 2010 CAPE TOWN --  Andisiwe Makinana also reports in the Cape Argus that there are plans afoot to do the very same thing for the city of Cape Town.

Democratic-Alliance councillor Jeanne-Pierre Smith was quoted as saying that they wanted to start a municipal website so that Capetonians could have access to detailed local crime statistics reflecting crime patterns right down to street level. He quoted an unnamed City of Cape Town councillor  as saying that ‘the city was  working on an elaborate network which will allow the public to view these (latest) statistics online.”

  • (JP Smith’s contact information: Ward Councillor: Ward 54 (Atlantic Seaboard), Member of Mayoral Committee: Safety & Security, Tel: (+27) 21 400 1310 Fax: (+27) 21 400 1312, Cell: (+27) 83 6753 780 E-mail: jean-pierre.smith@capetown.gov.za   -   Website: http://www.jpsmith.co.za)

At the same time, the DA will be seeking advice about the legality of the government's decision not to regularly release South Africa's crime statistics.

  • Crime was high on the DA's agenda at the weekend as it met for its fourth federal congress, held on at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

They want localised, monthly crime-statistics…

The party is proposing that crime statistics should be released on a monthly basis and that they should be localised and made freely available to the public and to community structures.

  • Currently, crime statistics are released once a year by the national Department of Police (formerly safety and security) and are broken down into provinces, cities and police stations. During the previous safety and security minister Charles Nqakula's term, crime statistics were sometimes released twice a year.

However, his successor, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, has gone back to releasing the statistics once a year. The most recent SAPS stats date from before March 2009 and the DA says this also emans that the statistics always run between six months to 18 months out of date…

In a resolution the party calls for the regular release of crime statistics – as this was ‘vital in the fight against crime because up-to-date and available crime stats helped communities and police determine crime trends in specific areas and relating to specific crimes.”

Delegates who were part of a group that was discussing security and justice matters at the federal congress also questioned why the party had not taken legal steps on the matter before. Emotions ran high as delegates debated the resolution on the release of crime statistics, and they threatened to launch a class action law suit against the government over the irregular release of the statistics and the lack of detail when they were made public.

  • During the discussion, Cape Town mayoral committee member J P Smith called for the metro police in each of South Africa's metros to also release their own statistics. The metropolitan-police is generally responsible only for traffic-related crimes. Smith said the City of Cape Town was "ready to roll on this (plan) in a few months".

Questioned later by the Cape Argus, Smith said the metro police already released crime statistics monthly to community policing forums --  and on request to anybody.

He said the city was working on an advanced network which would give detail "down to street level" and added that people looking to buy homes would now be able to make informed decisions.

Foreign Africans flee Du Noon township in Milnerton in large numbers…
Update: July 5 2010 – Radio 702 news reports that many black foreigners are now leaving Du Noon township near Milnerton, Cape. They fear new xenophobic attacks: Du Noon was the epicentre of these  organised attacks by black racists  in 2008, when some 20,000 African immigrants were chased out of the Western Cape alone by black South African ‘jackrolling’ gangs… and many hundreds-of-thousands of foreign Africans had fled into Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia…

Brink Botha, Brits farmer murdered 3 Nov 2008

Brink Botha, Brits farmer murdered by large gang 3 Nov 2008 – Thomas Chauke and Zondi Nkuna on trial: verdict 20 July 2010

Botha Brink 53 murdered 3 Nov2008 large gang attack

1 July 2010 reported by Cynthia Dreyer, Madibeng Pulse - PRETORIA HIGH COURT - Accused Thomas Chauke (32) and Zondi Nkuna (29), on trial for the murder on 3 November 2008 of well known Brits farmer and dog breeder Mr Brink Botha (53), will probably know their fate on 20 July when Judge  Peter Mabuse pronounces his verdict in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

This week the prosecutor Mr JP Marais argued for a guilty verdict because the two accused were part of a gang that invaded the deceased’s house and murdered him. The defence argued that the two accused’s guilt could not be proven and that they were wrongly pointed out during an identity parade.

Evidence put before the court showed that Chauke’s fingerprints were found on a cake tin in the house of the murder victim and that a cell phone stolen at the time was found on Nkuna. Chauke argued that he had done painting work for the deceased in the house which accounted for his fingerprints on the cake tin and Nkuna said that he had received the cell phone as payment from a certain Derek for a water pump. Derek, he said, was subsequently shot by police.

The heinous crime on 3 November 2008 at 03:00 happened when a large organised gang smashed the bedroom window where Brink and his wife Christelle (39) were sleeping on their farm. They could see the men outside because of the exterior lighting and Brink stormed forward to prevent the suspects entering the room.

  • During the ensuing struggle he was cold bloodedly shot twice in the chest while Christelle fled to the study to fetch a gun from the safe. One of the attackers grabbed her and forced her daughter Odelia (13) out of her bedroom, demanding money from the two women all the time in English. They weren’t interested in the weapons in the safe Mrs Brink said and when she showed them there was no money in the safe, proceeded to go through all the drawers in the house searching for cash. Mrs Botha gave them the R200 she had in her bag and they took two cell phones.

Before driving off with the Botha’s Corsa bakkie, as well as with the remote control for the gate, the gang tied up the two women in the study. After Mrs Botha and her daughter eventually freed themselves, they smashed the study window open with a chair and Mrs Brink went round the house and climbed back into the bedroom through the window.

There she found her husband dead and went to get help in her car, but not having the gate control, couldn’t get out of the property. She hooted until her workers woke up and raised the alarm at her neighbours. “I was calm all the time and knew the Lord would protect both Odelia and me against the criminals. I prayed all the time, also for them,” she said after the tragedy.

Griesel, Conrad Braam, farmer, Assen, in court for assaulting neighbour's worker in misunderstanding over copper cable

1 July 2010 By Dolf Dreyer Madibeng Pulse BRITS magistrate's court. Fourty-year-old farmer Conrad Braam Griesel was granted R1,000 after being charged with assaulting an unnamed neighbour's worker whom Griesel had mistaken for a copper-cable thief.

Griesel was not asked to plead and was released on R1 ,000 bail on condition that he appear in court again on 3 July 2010 . The charge sheet alleges that on Monday 28 June at about 09h40 the 22-year-old farm worker - whose name was not published -- was sent by his employer, a neighbour of the accused, to fetch an electrical extension cord.

Mr Griesel misunderstood – confronting the neighbour’s worker when seeing him in possession of an extension cord which he 'mistook for copper cable.'

  • (Copper-cable theft is economic sabotage: Theft of copper-cable is widespread and organised – and described as ‘’ economic sabotage’ by community leaders because of the powerful negative impact the loss of electricity supplies due to copper-cable theft has on the economy)

Mr Griesel was driving in a Land Cruiser, and he is accused of chasing the worker and knocking him down, then following him to a shop, grabbing the complainant, pushing him against a wall and then against a vehicle, then
tying the extention cord around the complainant's neck and taking him inside his vehicle to the man’s employer. The neighbour, according to the charge sheet, had then explained that he’d sent the worker to his farm to fetch an extention cable; that his worker was no copper-cable thief. SAPS Lt-Col Lesego Metsi said 'the suspect was shocked when the complainant’s employer told him that he (the employer) had sent the 22-year-old worker to fetch the extension cord. Mr Griesel then drove away. The victim claimed he sustained bodily injuries. “
