The attack was only confirmed four days later - on November 2 -- by the SAPS. The disabled man was attacked by four young black men just after his wife Hester, 60, a pharmacist’ assistant, had left for work at 8am. He is partially-disabled in the left arm and leg and has memory loss after suffering two strokes last year.

Mrs Bronkhorst said she usually phones her husband as soon as she arrives at work but on Monday she had a heavy workload and was unable to phone him for a few hours. When she finally did, ‘someone answered but then pushed the end-call button – but before he did I had heard voices from black males in the background. I phoned my neighbour Mrs Bob Rassert to ask him to investigate.

  • Rassert said he ‘kept shouting to Mr Bronkhorst from the outside but he did not answer’. Mrs Bronkhorst went home at 1pm and was unable to get inside because the men had locked her husband inside the house and had taken the keys.

She spoke with him from the outside and he apparently mumbled to her that he was ‘OK”. However when she got the spare key from the neighbour, she found her husband, bleeding and in extreme pain, behind the living-room door. “There was blood against the kitchen wall where they had bashed him against it. He was lashed with a sjambok’, she said.

While she was waiting for the ambulance she also discovered that the blacks had dripped melting plastic on his hands after they did not find any fireguns in the gun-safe. The signs showed that Mr Bronkhorst also was dragged from the kitchen to the living room and tortured him there. “It’s a shock to see your husband like that – I thought he was dead,’ she said.

.The torturers took jewellery, a cellphone, a watch and cash at the total value of about R10,000 ($1,000). SAPS spokesman capt Shado Mashobane confirmed the ‘incident’ and said nobody was arrested.  Of course.

Her sister Caroniena Cameron asked Beeld: ‘what kind of people melt burning plastic on someone’s hands. Those are not human beings doing such things…’
