Afrikaans couple shot dead for no reason

Oct 30 2009 - Leon and Hetta Steyn, owners of the rural Artist’s Cafe at the restored Hendriksdal railway station near Sabie in Mpumalanga,  were shot dead inside their home by an R5 military assault weapon. Two unknown black men were seen leaving the scene shortly after the shooting. Mr Steyn’s .38 handgun was still in its holster. Nothing was robbed.

Buks Viljoen  of Beeld newspaper reports from Nelspruit that the popular restaurateurs were discovered by neighbour Martin Boulton after he heard shots fired. When he knocked on the front door and called to them, the two murderers fled from the back door – one carrying an R5 military assault weapon.

The couple was murdered at around 7am. Mrs Steyn, a former kindergarten-teacher from the West-Rand, was lying propped up against the refrigerator in the kitchen, with a gaping wound to the head.

Mr Steyn’s body was lying next to his bed in the main bedroom. His .38 revolver was still inside its holster on the bedside table. He was shot through the chest. Both were still in their bedclothes.

Earlier reports yesterday claimed the couple was shot with a shotgun and that their home had been ‘burgled’. However this report clearly was inaccurate, said police: they picked up  six empty R5-bullet shellcasings and an R5 round inside the house.

Police inspector Whitey Nel of the Sabie police said the motives for the execution-style murders are murky: nothing was missing from the house. The White River police dog team started tracking the attackers’ shortly after the double murders and followed them for about an hour through neighbouring forestry-plantations. They had to stop the search when a heavy rainstorm hit the area, which washed out the tracks, said Capt Phil Liebenberg of the dog-unit.

The Artist’s Café and its tiny guest house is located in a rural area inside the restored Hendriksdal railway station and the station master’s historical home. It’s hugely popular among foreign tourists.

Beeld reports that a total of 147 military-attack carbines of the R5 variety went missing from the SAPS storage depots last year. The Transvaal Agricultural Union has called on the government to ‘carry out a proper audit of all the state-owned arms, because far too many crimes are carried out with firearms such as the R5.’

Mrs Steyn leaves her son from a previous marriage, Mr Dirk Nel, 24.  People with any information may call inspector Nel, telephone 013-764-9960 http://www.beeld.com/Content/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/1928/a3a7ea28303b4f629525d120b9603373/30-10-2009-01-01/Egpaar_vir_niks_geskiet

Afrikaner-murders hidden by ‘natural death’ documents

Oct 30 2009. Two new incidents have come to light in which the widows of murdered Afrikaner men who were shot dead at their smallholdings recently, have received death certificates from the Home Affairs Department claiming they had died of ‘natural causes’. Government officials claim these were ‘mistakes’. Similar incidents have however also been recorded by us in the past. Is this a deliberate pattern  -- an official attempt to cover up the murders of white South Africans? Can any official really be this ’stupid?‘

    The incidents:

    1. Car mechanic Henry Locke was shot through the heart in front of his family on their smallholding on Oct 4 2009 .. so he had a ‘heart attack”, stated the death certificate issued by the Dept. of Home Affairs …

    2. And a widow who refers to herself only as Elsabé writes in a letter to Beeld newspaper on Oct 30 2009 that the death certificate of her murdered husband, shot dead on 14 July 2009 at their smallholding in Raslouw, Pretoria, also claims that he died of ‘natural causes’ – and that 3 months later, the post-mortem results still have not released to the family, despite repeated requests. Our own records indicate that this death could relate to Nick M Roets, 56, the businessman who was murdered on July 14 2009 in broad daylight by a large gang at their Pretoria smallholdings in Raslow. There were no other murders officially reported in Raslouw that day. http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20090715043122202C944154

Case 1: Henry Locke, was shot through the heart on Oct 4 2009

2009-10-28 PRETORIA, South Africa. The widow of murdered car-mechanic Henry Locke, 39, who was shot through the heart on Oct 4 2009 in front of his family by gunmen, is enraged: his death certificate states that he died of ‘natural causes'(heart attack).

The outrageous lie infuriated  widow Amanda, 43 – and the Home Affairs Department now says it’s all  ‘a mistake’ and they would issue a corrected death-certificate at once.

“He was shot dead in front of our eyes,' the grieving Afrikaner widow told journalist Hilda Fourie. "The murderers didn't say a word. They just shot him. He fell right there where he was shot. How can the death certificate now claim that he died of 'natural causes'? It's impossible. It just cannot be'.

Mr Locke was murdered on 4 October at the Elands Game Farm near Cullinan, northeLocke Monique daughter murdered Henry, 39, Elands farm Cullinan Oct42009ast of Pretoria. It was an execution-style murder: nothing was robbed.

His wife, daughter Monique, 13, (picture) and quadruplegic son Dawie, 13, witnessed it. Mrs Locke was told  by phone when she asked for an explanation, that the 'natural cause' refer to the fact that when the bullet struck his heart, 'it caused a heart attack'…

Home Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa, asked to comment, apologised at once – and said that must be an inaccuracy on the death certificate. "This error will be corrected at once and the department apologises for this error,' he said.  http://www.beeld.com/Content/.../In_hart_geskiet_is_‘natuurlike_oorsake’

Case 2: Nick Roets, 56, Raslouw businessman, Pretoria, murdered:

Roets Nick smallholder murdered July 14 2009 Pretoria The lady who refers to herself as “Elsabe’ in her letter to Beeld, might well be  referring to the murder of Nick Roets, 56, who was shot dead in his Raslouw home after he was overpowered by an unknown number of assailants at lunchtime -  months after the collapse of a community watch system in the area. It was the only murder which took place in Raslouw that day. The murder sent the community into a growing spiral of fear, with his neighbours telling the newsmedia that violent crime in the area has skyrocketed, with no apparent end in sight. It is thought that the gunmen caught Roets by surprise as he sat at his desk in the study where he was apparently working on several of the business' financial books.

Roets, who was shot through the heart, is believed to have been killed with his own revolver, which, according to the police, was among six guns that were stolen, along with money and a laptop computer. It is believed that the gunmen took Roets's gun - which he always carried with him after the family were attacked in their home in 2001 - after overpowering him.

RoetsSmallholderMurderPretoriaNewsJuly152009FP As crying friends and relatives gathered to comfort the Roets family, shocked neighbours stood outside their homes waiting for news. "I can't believe it. I have spent most of the day outside and did not hear anything," said neighbour Peter Kgatuke. He described Roets as a friendly man who always had a smile on his face. "Whenever I saw him as I left for work he would wave and smile at me. He seemed to be a very kind person, and my heart goes out to his family," he said.

Kgatuke added that since the collapse of the area's community watch system, violent crime had escalated. "Last week my neighbour's domestic worker narrowly escaped an attack when robbers broke into the house. These crimes are all because our community security system has fallen apart," he said, describing how effective the neighbourhood watch system had been.

Asked why the system had collapsed, Kgatuke said: "I do not know. Everyone was in e-mail contact with each other. We were in the process of erecting security walls and gates around our community, and everything seemed to be on track until it suddenly all fell apart. "I am still trying to understand why the system collapsed," he said, adding that at the time of the collapse he had feared that someone would be seriously injured or even killed in an attack.

Another neighbour, Imtiaz Patel, agreed and said the gated community system would have gone a long way towards protecting people. "Unfortunately it did not materialise and now this has happened. Our greatest fears have been realised," he said. He said it would now be a case of people waking up in the morning and wondering who had been killed during the night. "It is imperative that we revise this community watch system if our neighbourhood is to be kept safe. We cannot allow these killings to continue," he said.

Families terrified – it happened in broad daylight…

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said his family were terrified. "If this can happen in broad daylight, imagine what can happen at night. We do not feel safe. We already have burglar bars and alarms. What else are we now meant to do to protect ourselves?" he asked. At the time of going to press, Roets's family were not available for comment. A friend said: "They are too distraught to even think properly. They do not know where to begin."
