How can a poor family survive on $25 for food each month?

“Chronic malnutrition is now taking on epic proportions …’

The Helping Hand charity of Solidarity trade union undertook an investigation into the soaring food-prices in South Africa. The charity is being overwhelmed by the huge number of requests for food-aid from impoverished white Afrikaners who no longer can afford even one meal a day any longer, the Solidarity uníon’s radio programme noted on 5 October.

Afrikaner poor squatter camp Pretoria there are more than 70 such camps in Pretoria alone says Solidarity Helpende HandEvery day, Helping Hand gets pleas from desperate people who simply don’t have food on the table any more, and these are people who have less than R250 ($25) a month to buy food for their families with. So, we asked ourselves, what kind of food can we buy for $25 a month? What would be the most economical, balanced and nutritious meals any ordinary person could be buying in SA for this money today?” asked programme presenter Lindie Strydom, Helping Hand PRO.

Picture: There are more than 70 squatter camps for the Afrikaner poor of Pretoria alone… More than 800,000 people now receive charity food-parcels from Helping Hand…

Lindie Strydom, PRO of Helping Hand and radio-presenter pointed out that achronic lack of nutritious, sufficient food is the ‘greatest form of depowerment which can hit any poor people. Those who still have sufficient food each day, can increase their income with higher productivity and able to work, while poor people just get more and more impoverished because they don’t get enough nutricious food each day. So we looked not only at the economic costs, but also at the nutrititous contents of such a monthly food-basket,’ she said.

She first interviewed dietician Maryke van Zyl, and Helping Hand then tested her proposed monthly food-basket by cooking a nutritious meal for 20 people costing only R20 ($1) she said.

She says Maryke has now handed over all her research material to Helpende Hand to help the charity draw up the most efficient and nutrious meals and also to educate the country’s many hundreds of thousands of pauperised Afrikaners who now live in squatter camps, about providing themselves with economical yet nutritious meals which they can purchase even from their own monthly pensions or even when they are on the lowest pay scales.

“Most people for instance view a daily lunch as completely normal, yet the reality is that poverty and malnutrition is now taking on epic proportions in South Africa.”

She also obtained feeding advice from a soup-kitchen in Brits and a nursery school in Centurion. Link to this programme, in Afrikaans, at www.solidariteitradio.co.za  Lindie Strydom - Solidariteit Helpende Hand SkakelbeamptePosted in Mediaverklarings

Afrikaner poor need urgent food-aid warn charities

Afrikaner Poverty in Wolmer Pretoria - housing project by Solidarity trade union helping hand charity April 2009 October 17 2009 – PRETORIA. This week, a growing number of urgent calls are issued via Facebook and internet sites from South Africa by the few  private charities who actually care for the country’s more than 800,000 poor Afrikaners (out of 3-million).

The SA government food-agencies in many provinces still deny food-aid to most of these Afrikaner poor -- and they have thus far relied on private donations to keep the growing number of desperately hungry people fed and housed.

For instance, as can be seen on the picture on the left, the Helpende Hand charity of Solidarity Trade Union not only feeds the Afrikaner poor, but also helps provide backyard shanties to house these families. Solidarity trade union, which maintains this charity, also has a job-training and employment agency to try and help these often well-skilled Afrikaners find a job – even though most of these ‘whites’, even with top skills and job experience, are being barred from the entire labour market  due to the government’s black-economic-empowerment laws.

These private charities this week have been issuing warnings that the great many Afrikaner squatter communities now are in an increasingly desperate situation, with the squatter camps’ residents physical strength reportedly waning due to the chronic under-feeding they have to endure.

Basically, these camps now are running out of food supplies and urgently need new donations – preferably canned foods. Also: ‘aching poverty includes all races now: http://censorbugbear-reports.blogspot.com/2009/10/aching-poverty-includes-all-races-and.html

Some 70+ Afrikaner squatter camps in greater Pretoria alone:

Food supplies have now completely run out at at least two charity-old-age homes caring for frail, pauperised Afrikaners – and many of the Afrikaner families in Pretoria’s more than 70 squatter camps for whites, now go without daily meals.

Helping Hand warns that especially the ‘white squatter camps in greater Pretoria have increased from 38 camps in May 2008 to 71 sites in February 2009. “Many thousands of Afrikaner children no longer have the money to obtain higher education after matriculation, and those who graduate from matric also are not allowed to access the South African labour market because of the ANC-government’s blacks-only hiring laws.  Many tens of thousands of Afrikaner families now are completely reliant on the feeding schemes provided by charities like ours, for their daily food needs.’http://www.helpendehand.co.za/nuusbriewe/hh32.htm English: http://www.helpinghandfund.co.za/?page_id=53

Many whites still turned down by government feeding centres:

Depending on the officials the government food-aid centres for the poor, most whites also still find themselves being turned away from these feeding stations which have been set up by the ANC-provincial governments since 2002: despite urgent pleas to president Jacob Zuma in 2008 by Solidarity, suchso-called  ‘whites’, referred to as ‘previously advantaged population members, ‘ are still being denied this food-aid by many officials, even if they are in a desperate situation such as this one, it is being reported.

There are just a few local private charities which actually help this increasingly desperate minority  --- the main one being Solidarity Trade Union’s Helpende Hand organisation who now feeds some 800,000 desperate poor, homeless Afrikaners and helps erect squatter shelters for them;  there’s also the Freedom Front party’s charity; the Reddingsdaadbond of the Boer Freedom movement; and a great many smaller religious charities and missions where poor Afrikaners have been given refuge across the country.

We need canned foods – urgently:

“Whatever you have – please send it to us. We especially need canned foods. These can be  offloaded at “Oom Hans’ of the Reddingsdaadbond,” writes one such charity you can email at: hans@armoedebediening.co.za http://www.facebook.com/l/48f81;www.armoedebediening.co.za
