Is there tolerance in SA for Afrikaners?

Mulder Pieter 2ndleft_ltrJerome Topley, Mulder, Niel Gilliomee_Orton King AgriMegaWeekWesternCapeExpoSept212009 Sept 23 2009 -- Dr. Pieter Mulder, Leader of the Freedom Front Plus and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, asks on South Africa’s ‘heritage day’ whether there is a place for tolerance for everyone in South Africa – Afrikaners included?

Picture: Dr Mulder, second left, speaking as deputy-agriculture minister at the AgriMega Week in the Western Cape, described his country’s commercial farmers as the best in the world

Mulder: “Two viewpoints have been heard from government circles about this in the past decade. The one viewpoint was developed by the Thabo Mbeki intellectuals and was again recently voiced by (theologan)  Dr. Nico Smith (TV Focus 20 Sept 2009).

‘The ‘stupid Afrikaners’ now are trapped…’

  • This  Mbeki-view is in short the following: “Europeans came from Europe to colonize Africa. When they started experiencing opposition from the local inhabitants, the French, the Belgians, the Portuguese and the English went back to Europe. The stupid Afrikaners did not realize the crisis, missed the bus and are now trapped in South Africa. That is why they should be tolerated as “Settlers of a special kind”. They however should not make any waves or put any demands to the rulers. “Be reasonable, see it our way”, a clever ANC negotiator tried to convince me,” Dr Mulder said.

He said that this (Mbeki-)viewpoint was unacceptable to him – it’s “historically inaccurate and moreover, creates more problems than it resolves.”

Afrikaners are true South Africans who have no other passports…

“The other government viewpoint is the Jacob Zuma and Matthews Phosa view. In interviews Mr. Zuma, described Afrikaans speakers as “true South Africans whose language is not spoken anywhere else in the world and who do not have any other passports and who have to come into their own right here.” (Beeld 3/4/2009).

  • “Naturally this view has also led to some reactions. The future will show to which extent this view was only electioneering and how it will be applied in practice. This view is however more realistic and acceptable.”

We aren’t colonists and have no motherland to escape to:

“Unlike the French in Algiers, Afrikaners do not have a motherland that will take care of it or to whereto they could escape.

  • “Afrikaners are not colonialists but citizens with rights. There demands around affirmative action, minority rights, the place of Afrikaans as a language, self-determination etc. are reasonable an in line with the latest international tendencies.”

There are Europeans who live very well as individuals in African countries such as Kenya and the Ivory Coast. They however put their money in banks in Switzerland, enjoy holidays in Spain and send their children to schools in Britain. This is colonialism and adheres to the criticism of Dr. Nico Smith.

“Afrikaners’ position is different. They have made a huge contribution to help make South Africa the strongest country in Africa.

  • “As a result, Mr. Zuma becomes the only representative from Africa to be invited to attend the G20 Summit.

Afrikaners want to survive as a community in Africa:

“Afrikaners are still making a contribution because we know that if the South African ship sinks, we all sink together. But Afrikaners also demand more than the individuals in Kenya and the Ivory Coast. We want to survive as a community in Africa. A community has its own communal life; has schools and universities where their language and culture is carried over to the next generation without any discrimination against them.

“Is it asked too much to be one's self in Africa?” Dr Mulder asks.

“ If you have to sacrifice yourself to be accepted and to survive in Africa, then the price is too high. Remember, to cling to a piece of driftwood in the sea after a disaster, is also a very primitive form of survival.”

“Everything mentioned above however does not mean that Afrikaners can just continue as they have up to now. A debate as to how Afrikaners have to adapt, is a more sensible debate than a demand that Afrikaners have to sacrifice everything for survival.”

Here follows four guidelines for such a debate:

1. In looking for answers, Afrikaners have to scale down their expectations and put forward realistic demands.

  • Some Afrikaners are hoping for an instant solution where for example the ANC breaks up or at the next election is defeated at the polls. Deeply underlying to this is an effort to have something of the old order re-instated. It will not work like this.

Other Afrikaners again are hoping for a total collapse of the country – the sooner the better. The mistake in their reasoning is that they believe that after such a collapse the old order can be re-instated again. The opposite will happen. After such a collapse, South Africa will most probably be stuck with a military junta by one of the new generals and no constitution or other protective mechanism.

  • “The lesson that most Afrikaners still have to learn is that the Afrikaner, after the events of 1994, has to bring its expectations and demands in line with its own numbers, with its real economic power and its capability to retain that which it has.”

2. In searching for solutions for its continued existence in Africa, the solution has to be modern and fair toward others – but also fair towards the Afrikaner.

  • “Our situation is not as unique as most people want to make it out to be. In the world there are many modern examples of how minority groups’ languages, cultures and other needs can be accommodated sensibly. Political correctness has lead to an avoidance debating this issue.”

3. The Afrikaner has to make peace with Africa and the fact that he is in Africa.

  • “The future of Afrikaans and the Afrikaner will not be decided in Europe, Canada or Australia, but in Africa.
  • “The Afrikaner is quick to say that he is from Africa, but his actions often indicate the opposite. There is no way the Afrikaner can escape the realities of Africa and also that which he does not like. Leaving Africa could be a solution for individuals but not for a whole community.
  • To make peace with Africa does not mean giving up our Western cultural roots. It does however mean that the Afrikaner identifies with the problems of Africa and with its expertise play a unique role in Africa.”

4. The Afrikaner will have to create its own future and not put its hope in a government or other groups to rescue it.

  • On the one hand it is irresponsible to wait passively for the government to solve all the problems. On the other hand, a government does not have to be a stumbling block. A wise government can, through cooperation and negotiation, make it easier for itself and for such a minority group to live sensibly and make a contribution in the interest of all.””

Mr Zuma’s supporters will also have to adapt, he warns…

“Just like many Afrikaners still have to adapt, many of Mr. Zuma’s supporters still have to adapt too,’ he warns.

  • “ Too many Cabinet Ministers and ANC supporters still choose the Mbeki viewpoint (referring to Afrikaners as colonists), as their comments clearly show.
  • “ It is a more popular viewpoint in speeches and can be used very easily to explain problems and to point the Afrikaner and/or white people out as the scapegoat for everything. It however does not bring any solutions.”

Black MP not fired from Assembly over White Bitch hate-speech

The SA opposition party Congress of the People’s youth leader Anele Mda was merely ‘suspended’ from all leadership positions for a while – but will still stay on as a South African Parliamentarian. This was the ANC’s break-away party’s very weak response to the black MP calling COPE deputy-general secretary Deidre Carter a “stupid, white token bitch.’  statement

Mda_Anele_fired from Cope but not as MP for White Bitch slur Sept 23 2009 Sowetan 23 September 2009 – THE SOWETAN’s Anna Majavu and other news media report that COPE ‘s MP was merely ‘suspended’ from her post as president of Cope’s youth movement, even though she had called their deputy general secretary Deirdre Carter a “stupid, white token bitch”.

It’s not reported whether she’s ever apologised for this slur either – although her party has finally done so in a half-hearted way on September 23 2009.

Cope general secretary Charlotte Lobe was quoted by SOWETAN as saying that: “It was a once-off incident but it speaks to the moral fibre of Cope. That’s not how we expect a Cope member to behave.”

Lobe said Mda had not been suspended as a member of the party and would remain a member of Parliament. “This is not punishment, it is rehabilitation,” Lobe said.

Mda herself has refused to talk to Sowetan but a Cope youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Mda had not been slapped over the wrist for her racist comment, but instead been “purged for challenging Mosiuoa Lekota’s autocratic rule of Cope’.

“Why take an informal conversation [between Carter and Mda] and want to formalise it? The real reason why Mda is suspended is because she asked publicly why Lekota was not made to account for contradicting Cope’s policy on black economic empowerment. That was a turning point,” the source said.

  • Mda also reportedly refused to allow Lekota to chair Cope’s youth movement meetings when he arrived unannounced on a few occasions. She also exposed Smuts Ngonyama for funding T- shirts bearing the face of Lekota, the source said. Mda reportedly wanted Cope to support an investigation into the arms deal.

“After that she was perceived as a person who wanted to open a can of worms. But if we want to pursue a corruption-free government we can’t continually say this matter doesn’t interest us,” the source said. The source accused Lekota of purging any Cope leader who supported Mbhazima Shilowa to be elected party president at next year’s elective conference.

But a leading Cope member from the Shilowa camp disagreed, writes SOWETAN’s reporter – who has had to rely heavily on unnamed sources for this report and also did not obtain any formal comment from Deidre Carter – the target of Mda’s hate-speech attack.

Said ‘the leading COPE member’: “Everyone agreed we can’t allow our leaders to make racist insults. It’s against the heart of what we stand for.” Cope youth movement general secretary Malusi Booi agreed. “She was only suspended for the Carter incident.”

Apology to the People of South Africa by Cope

  • September 23 2009 - ‘The CWC takes this opportunity to apologise, on behalf of the members of the Congress of the People, to the people of South Africa that such behaviour should even be alleged to have been committed by its member especially one who is in leadership. As COPE we re-iterate our commitment to a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa. We also re-iterate our belief in building a membership that is disciplined and respectful of our values as a democratic African country. The CWC also regrets that, due to the need for it to give this matter serious consideration, it has taken longer than it would have liked to address this matter. On this note we call on our membership to respect this disciplinary process. For more information please contact Secretary General Charlotte Lobe on 082 496 8025.

Plettenberg librarian, 78, stabbed to death by ‘poor teens’ she made sandwiches for

Murder victim ‘often made her killers sandwiches’

2009/09/22  Neil Oelofse GARDEN ROUTE CORRESPONDENT oelofseN@avusa.co.za http://www.epherald.co.za/article.aspx?id=475132

Blignaut Johanna 78 librarian Plettenberg Bay killed by two youths after making them sandwiches Sept 21 2009 Neil Oelofse

Two (black) teenagers from a neighbouring township were  arrested for the murder of 78-year-old Johanna Blignault, left, a long-time librarian of Wittedrift,  Plettenberg Bay.

Reports are that the 78-year-old Afrikaner lady ws stabbed to death after she had made sandwiches for the arrested youths – as she’d often done.

Apparently the uouths had lso stolen some electronic bling, a small amount of cash and frozen food from Mrs Blignault’s house.

Dominee Chris du Preez of the Wittedrift Dutch Reformed Church said the two boys, aged 16 and 17, from the adjoining black township of Green Valley, ‘had frequently visited Johanna Blignault at her home, where she gave them food.’

Police who found Blignault’s blood- soaked body outside her back door also found evidence suggesting she had made them sandwiches in her kitchen on Saturday afternoon. A bloody knife was found at the scene.

The arrested youths were ordered to remain in custody when they appeared briefly in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Police said their case was postponed to Tuesday next week for a bail application.

Evidence was also found to suggest Blignault had been raped, but police said a post-mortem would be conducted today to establish the facts.

The two suspects used the R150 ($15) they allegedly took from the kindhearted Afrikaner woman’s purse to buy alcohol.

The police arrested them while drinking at the home they shared with the grandmother of one of the boys in Green Valley on Saturday night. A DVD player was also found with the two youths --  after police earlier found a radio and frozen chicken, also allegedly from Blignault’s home, in bushes outside the grandmother’s house.

  • Both youths had previous brushes with the law. One was out on bail and was to be sentenced yesterday on a charge of housebreaking, while the other was serving a suspended sentence for stealing a car.

After the murder Du Preez set up a Facebook site for Blignault, and by yesterday 102 people had already joined. “I did it to provide a forum for people to express their sorrow and anger. It is better to talk about this than not,” he said.

Du Preez said Blignault was “a real community leader who served as Wittedrift librarian for more than 50 years without remuneration”, and was loved by the community. “It was heartening to see the people of Green Valley come in droves on Saturday to mourn her.”

Du Preez praised the police for their “sterling work” and quick response to the crime scene. “Detective Inspector John Nomdoe did fantastic work. From the moment he arrived he acted calmly and professionally and took control of the situation.” Plett’s head of detectives, Superintendent Zola Zatu, was also singled out for praise. “He spent hours with us while we waited for the forensic team from George, who were also fantastic.”

This is the symptom of a sick society

Blignault’s son, Jeffrey’s Bay attorney Ernie, said yesterday his mother was “a very soft, well- loved person”. “She really did not deserve this. This is the symptom of a sick society. It feels as if we are sliding back into the middle ages.” He said his mother had chosen to stay in Wittedrift after her husband George, a teacher at the local high school for 35 years, passed away 13 years ago.

  • “She lived in Wittedrift for 54 years. She was happy there. She enjoyed helping the people in her work as librarian and in her contributions to the church.”

She is survived by her son Ernie, 50, and daughters Gene, 45, and Helena, 51. She will be buried in Wittedrift on Friday. The Wittedrift community was still in shock yesterday, but everyone contacted attested to Blignault’s generous spirit. A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she was the first to come across Blignault’s body after the elderly woman failed to answer her telephone. “I went to check because I knew she was home. It’s unbelievable that she has been attacked by people from the very community she served selflessly for 50 years.” http://www.epherald.co.za/article.aspx?id=475132

Afrikaners in Krugersrus, Springs live in fear

2009-09-22 Karen Nagel, 45, Springs, murdered by 5-member attack gang at Krugersrus home - husband Jan survives:

September 22 2009 -- André Damons of Beeld and Hannes Myburgh of The Star report that the primarily Afrikaner residents of the tiny Krugersrus suburb in Springs, a working-class mining town near Johannesburg, live in fear after 45-year-old resident Karen Nagel was gunned down in cold blood by a five-member armed gang which invaded their home at around 9:30 on Saturday-night.

  • Her husband Jan survived miraculously when the armed men stormed into their home by breaking through the sliding door and started shooting at once: he stopped a bullet with his hand but otherwise is not injured. Nothing was robbed.

Community members are angered about the senseless murder, reports Beeld. and the fact that the police took such a long time to show up.  The Nagel couple’s son-in-law George Gerber, who lives five houses away, heard the shots, ran out, saw one of the attackers run away and set off in hot pursuit – but was unable to catch him, he said. Community members mounted an organised search but the men just disappeared. Resident Louis Nel, 36, said there’s ‘about a weekly shooting in our suburb’.

Basically we are just sitting around, waiting who will be targetted next. Every slight noise awakens my wife and kids. The men don’t sleep any more, they drive around nights, patrolling the neighbourhood.” He says a large construction site adjacent to the small Afrikaner-suburb might be the source of the crime-wave. “We have asked the municipality which bought the site, to clean up the site, which houses many vagrants. At times that place sounds like a war-zone, with 15 to 20 shots fired at one time on a regular basis.’

The Star’s journalist also reported claims by other residents discussing this murder attack, that ‘the police had allowed the five attackers time to flee by arriving too late.’

The record shows that shortly after the shooting, many family members started calling 10111, 112 and 911 pretty much simulataneously, trying to get through on any of these numbers.

The Star reports that paramedics were the first to arrive -- at about 10.30pm, an hour after the shooting and tried to stabilise Karen before she was taken to Glenwood Hospital in Benoni, where she was first put on life-support machines, and then declared brain-dead. The first police unit arrived only 45 minutes after that. Another police spokeswoman senior superintendent Noxolo Kweza, commented that ‘these allegations about the police's actions would be investigated. “http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20090921040043929C903887

20090919 Mrs Blignaut, 80, murdered by crime gang in garden: Plettenberg Bay

We also obtained a first report from a Plettenberg Bay resident that the elderly mother of a local attorney, Ernie Blignaut, was shot dead on Saturday-afternoon in broad daylight on September 19 while she was working in her garden. The old lady, 80, was gunned down by ‘two 16-year-old youths who were part of gang and had planned the attack for some time.’ We will try to obtain more information about this.
