Luxury suburb Waterkloof besieged by armed gangs

July 27 2009 Van Rooyen family robbed by arrogant gang, “unperturbed’ by howling alarm…

Jul 27 2009 WATERKLOOF RIDGE PRETORIA -- Hilda Fourie of Beeld newspaper reports that the armed black gangsters who attacked the Van Rooyen family inside their luxury Waterkloof Ridge home -- just after they’d turned off the TV on Friday-evening --  were ‘unperturbed’about the loud howling of an alarm set off by the family matriarch. One of the robbers calmly continued to take off Van Rooyen’s shoes and jacket while pointing a gun to his head – even though he knew that the Brooklyn armed response team were already on the way…

  • This news report does not say what else was looted besides Van Rooyen’s shoes and jacket. There was actually very little time: Brooklyn police and private security guards were on the scene within just minutes – yet amazingly, while they located the spot where the gang had climbed across the electrified fence (!), they captured no-one.

The entire Waterkloof suburbian area is one of South Africa’s wealthiest areas, yet the crime records show that it is under a state of siege from armed criminal gangs, with the death-rate from murder/homicidal attacks reaching 38 by the end of 2007 – and that year, 159 helpless mostly white families were also attacked inside their homes by violent armed gangs that year. One hallmark of these Pretoria gangs is that they will even climb across electrified security fencing, as this particular gang had also done.

Rooyen van Illana headgirl Waterkloof Afrikaans High with headboy Jaco Hauman Illana van Rooyen, 18, (picture. head-girl at the Afrikaans High School Waterkloof, (she is pictured in this school photograph with headboy Jaco Hauman, who was not involved in this incident) was held at gunpunt with her father Pieter, 47 in the TV-room at 22:45, just as they had  turned off the TV. Three black men walked in, armed with a handgun, a knife and a hacksaw. The younger daughter Anzelle, 15, and mother Alida, 45, already were asleep. When they heard Pieter speak loudly, in English, in the TV room, Mrs Van Rooyen locked herself and Anzelle into a bedroom and immediately pushed the emergency alarm button – linked to the nearby Brooklyn police station.

Van Rooyen told the journalist that while the alarm was howling away however, the men still didn’t stop what they were doing, even when he’d warned them that the police reaction unit was enroute, and that they should flee. Instead, Van Rooyen was taken at gunpoint into the living room where they calmly took off the jacket and shoes he was wearing. Another attacker did let go of Illana’s arm however, she said, giving her the chance to run and hide – and immediately phone their private security company Hi-Risk. The three attackers only left when the police were ringing the front door bell, Van Rooyen said. The police and private security were on the scene within minutes, said Illana. “I was terrified throughout that the attackers would shoot my dad,’ she said. Police said access was gained to the high-security property by the gang climbing across the electrified fence and forcing open the backdoor.

Security wall around Waterkloof Ridge – it’s high time…

Meanwhile Van Rooyen said the Pretoria city council had finally given permission for a security wall to be built to close off Waterkloof Ridge ‘s 173 homes to create a security village ‘because of the tremendously high crime rate’. The wall can’t be built however until all the residents have made financial contributions. He said the barricade will bar access to the adjacent squatter camp at the Monument Park rock quarry, which has been pinpointed as the source of the crime targetting their upmarket neighbours.  http://jv.news24.com/Beeld/Suid-Afrika/0,,3-975_2542529,00.html  http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=nw20080203162819262C959825

Nursery school principal Rinda Abraham murdered January 26 2008

2008-02-15 Pretoria – In January 2008, principal Rinda Abraham  of the ‘Kleutermaatjies’ pre-school, was shot and killed in her Waterkloof Ridge home on Saturday, January 26, when a gang, pretending to be potential buyers of the property, entered and immediately opened fire on members of her family inside their home.  When Mrs Abraham came running out of her room after she heard shots, one of the robbers grabbed her around the neck and shot her through the heart – execution style. Three men were arrested and tried in the Pretoria District Court: Dinis Gentil Nhone, 36, Christavao Fresco Mbina, 19 and a third male who claimed to be under the age of 16. All were from Mozambique.  The 15-year-old was also charged for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, which was used in Abraham's murder according to forensic evidence. His two co-accused were charged with murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Mbina also briefly was a co-accused in the murder of Welsh-born businessman Fred Picton-Turbervill, also in Waterkloof ridge, but the charges against him in that case were dropped.

Eventually, they were granted bail and then all charges against them were dropped in this case due to ‘a lack of evidence’ : the only witnesses, the traumatised surviving Picton-Turbervill family members, had moved back to Wales. The accused had denied breaking into Picton-Tubervill's home in Waterkloof Ridge, and denied forcing him, his wife Ursula and their four children to lie down as they robbed their house. Then also denied that one of them had shot the family patriarch through the eye. They had this case postponed repeatedly until they finally were released ‘due to a lack of evidence’.   The murder of their father was a terrible ordeal for the children, said wife Ursula shortly after the murder: the Picton-Turbervills had been at home with four of their six children, aged between 10 and three when the armed gang struck.

According to the BBC report at the time, ‘Mr Picton-Turbervill had begged the men not to harm his children but they did not respond,’ quoting his South African-born wife Ursula Picton-Turbervill. He was then shot in the eye in front of two of the children.  "I didn't see it because he was behind me but my two older girls saw it and were traumatised," Mrs Picton-Turbervill told the BBC. They had moved to South Africa five years earlier. The gang’s loot was very small: a laptop computer, £75 in cash, jewellery and cellphones.  Mrs Picton-Turbervill told the BBC that they had been “aware of the high violent crime rate in the Waterkloof Ridge area” where they lived – and that their home was surrounded by two-metre high walls and electric fencing. Mrs Picton-Turberville took her family back to Wales, where they scattered Fred’s ashes in the countryside around Ewenny in the Vale of Glamorgan, where he hailed from.   http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/7175840.stm http://www.citizen.co.za/index/News/757903.page http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/7184657.stm

Dec 2008: Afrikaans couple attacked twice within four days: terrified of remaining in Waterkloof Ridge…

Scheepers_Dagmar_Robert_ScaredGoingHomeAfterAHattackDec2007Pta Armed attacks have been reported before in Waterkloof Ridge. Last December 22, another Afrikaans couple, Robert Scheepers, 53 and wife Dagmar, pictured left on a Beeld newspaper photograph, were even attacked twice within four days. – and the second time, they didn’t even bother to report it to police because of the poor response. The couple said they were lucky to be alive both times: a gun had failed to fire in both occasions. The robbers overpowered the couple in their bedroom. Scheepers said one of the robbers ordered them to lie on their stomachs. "He told me in broken English: "Now we put you to sleep forever." "He pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. I started praying and at one stage I said: 'Lord, you've got to help us now. Please let the alarm go off.'" Moments later the alarm did go off and the robbers got a fright. Scheepers tried to raise the police on the 10111 number – but it was ‘out of order,’ he said: "We tried several times, but it didn't even ring."The robbers fled only with his wife's cellphone.

The couple informed the police, ‘in the hope,” they said, ‘ that the robbers might be traced through the cellphone.’ And the robbers did answer the cellphone the next day, Mrs Scheepers said -- but the police had ‘failed to find them’.

  • One gets the idea that you are all alone in this battle,"  Scheepers told the newspaper at the time.

Four days later, two of five robbers overpowered Dagmar Scheepers while she was watering the garden. They were recognised as belonging to the same gang which had attacked them before. "I head a scream and walked into one of the robbers when I ran out. He pulled the trigger, but once again the gun didn't fire," Scheepers said. The black attacker then tried to hit Scheepers over the head with the gun, but the Afrikaner homeowner managed to get away, running to his neighbour for help. This sent the attackers packing by firing high shots over the fence. The neighbour then also immediately called 10111 – but ran into some very odd problems:

  • Policewoman at emergency number could not spell:
  • "The woman who answered could not spell, and my neighbour had to spell Cliff Street repeatedly. The police later arrived, saying they were summoned to Greeff Street. There is no such street in the suburb."
  • Scheepers said they didn't even bother to report the second robbery. "What for? You are actually wasting your time."

He said a guard he hired after the second robbery, told him on December 29 that two men again tried to gain access to the house during the morning.  The couple, who have been living at the house for the past 14 years, said they were too afraid to go home and were staying with their son in Faerie Glen. "We won't be able to live there again," said Dagmar Scheepers. Police superintendent Eugene Opperman commented at the time that ‘it was possible that the 10111 line was out of order from time to time due to factors such as thunder or cable theft. It is usually repaired very soon."  He said nothing about the policewoman’s inability to spell – which allegedly had sent the cops off on a wild-goose chase to a non-existent address… http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2245922,00.html

38 violent deaths in this upperclass region in 2007:

The last-available SA Police Service crime statistics – dating from the end of 2007 – indicate the following crimes in the Brooklyn police district, which includes Waterkloof Ridge:

  • There were 38 violent deaths recorded in 2007 in this community of 78,000 residents, broken down in seperate categories by the police statistics as 15 murders plus 23 culpible homicides;

Also reported that year were 168 grievous assaults which caused serious trauma (it’s not reported whether any of these victims have subsequently died of their injuries); 797 robberies; 159 armed robberies of families inside their homes and 1,306 burglaries of family homes; 48 armed robberies of local businessmen and 294 burglaries of local businesses.

This flies directly in the face of claims by the SA government that ‘the most violent crimes are limited to black townships’. This claim is often made on SA tourism websites as well – however it is a lie. Well-off communities such as Waterkloof are hit by some of the most violence-driven crimes in South Africa which often target such white families. http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/crimestats/2008/_provinces/gauteng/pdf/brooklyn.pdf

Routine security measures needed to protect one’s family in South Africa:

Security Minister probes ‘motiveless murders’ of whites

Whites in Pretoria – mostly Afrikaners – targetted in senseless murders by armed gangs where nothing is robbed…

Mthethwa Nathi SA Minister Safety Security probe into motiveless murders of whites July 2009 Jul 27 2009 Nathi Mthethwa, the new minister of safety and security in South Africa, has launched an urgent probe into the great many motiveless murders targetting mostly white residents in the Greater Pretoria area.

In the latest incident, Afrikaner dad Stephanus Johannes Weideman Handford (37) was shot down execution-style in the Thatchfield Manor security complex in Centurion in front of his wife and five-month-old triplet-sons by a black, armed gang. Nothing was robbed.

That same day, Afrikaner businessman Johann Blignaut (54) was also shot dead execution style while working at his laptop computer in his lapa, a fenced-off area of his garden in Moreleta Park east of Pretoria. Again, nothing was robbed by this black gang which had torn out a concrete panel of a high-security wall to get to their target. They even left alone his lap-top, usually one of the most popular items to be robbed in South Africa after cell-phones…

Two weeks earlier, a University of Pretoria staff member, Mrs Pat Beckmann, was left paralysed after she was gunned down in her home in Constantia Park east of Pretoria by a black gang. Again, nothing was robbed from her home.

Mthethwa’s spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi told Beeld Afrikaans-language newspaper: “This is a serious problem. Why are people being murdered without anything being robbed? The minister is investigating this matter.’

Last week, Mthethwa also made a public statement in Pretoria in which he introduced a countrywide crime-sweep called Operation Washa Tsotsi – and which means, he warned, ‘ that residents would see a lot more cops, police vehicles, road-blocks and Oryx-helicopters of the Defence Force in their communities’.

Operation Washa Tsotsi was launched as ‘an intelligence-driven campaign to combat serious and organised crime’, according to the government’s website.
