2009-09-08 -- Hilda Fourie of Beeld newspaper reports that singer-songwriter André Swiegers en his 20 year-old son Jean escaped being murdered by a rock-thrower who targetted their car on the N14-highway near Diepsloot township. The father and son were enroute to Pretoria after a ten-day tour.

“If that rock had landed just a fraction of a second earlier, we would both have been stone-cold dead,’ said Swiegers. “It was a deliberate murder attempt, they (the stone-throwers) wanted to take out those ‘people in the car’,  he said.

The two Afrikaners just drove beneath a bridge when they heard the stone crash against their windscreen. “It sounded like a gunshot. I got as cold as ice,’ he said. “Underneath the bridge, I looked back and saw two men run away. I wouldn’t not have been able to catch them in time. There was nothing I could do,’ he said.

Manipulated crime statistics – or just incompetence?

He reported the stone-attack to the Wierda Bridge policestation in Centurion. He said initially, the policeman couldn’t understand him. Eventually, he managed to draw up a ‘crash report’, he said – but he wanted to lodge a charge of attempted murder and property-damage, said the singer. After Beeld enquired about this oversight, a police station official phoned the singer just minutes later and apologised,. Police captain Agnes Huma said there had been ‘a misunderstanding’ and asked Swiegers to lodge his complaint again, this time at the ‘nearest police station’. The policeman who fuddled up the first report was a student, she said, and is being investigated, she added.

Nantes Kelder, head of community safety at the forum, said ‘it’s a fact that a ‘crash report’ was noted rather than the more serious charges of attempted murder and property-damage, and that this was another example of the ‘manipulation of crime statistics.’ Swiegers agreed, saying that ‘something bigger is part of this picture. It all points fingers at incompetence,’ he said.
