Three white women’s gangrape ordeal on trial

Defiant gang-rapist flips magistrate the bird…

September 10 2009 – PRETORIA. It doesn’t happen very often that rapists are caught and tried in South Africa – which has the highest rape-rates in the world.

The undermanned police are stretched too thin to catch “mere rapists” when they are kept more occupied in chasing down the country’s thousands of armed murder-gangs.

The fact that three rapists were caught with one victim still in the car-boot, thus drew the attention of the news media. The three deeply religious Afrikaans women of Centurion faced a second ordeal by having to testify with the gang-rapists snickering at them.

Two Afrikaans journalists attended the trial in the Pretoria Regional Court.

Yesterday, one of the defiant, unrepentant accused black gang-rapists “flipped the bird” at magistrate Solomon Mkhabela, reports Hanti Otto in the Pretoria News.

The ethnic-identification of the three victims was censored out of the original South African news reports. However our enquiries show that all three rape/kidnap victims were young, religious Afrikaans women from Centurion. Their race is very relevant in this case, because these women, being white, had been picked out as ‘soft, rich targets’ by the gang – hijacked in their Centurion driveways, kidnapped,  dumped in their car boots, driven around for nearly two days, gang-raped, and their bank accounts looted during their long ordeal.

Only minutes after the magistrate referred to this hours of long trauma suffered by the three young women – one had tried to commit suicide after her ordeal --  one of the accused, clearly untouched by this emotional evidence,  showed a middle finger at the investigating team in court.

Magistrate Solomon Mkhabela yesterday started summarising the evidence of the lengthy trial as part of his judgment against the accused rapists James Slinger, 18, David Sekole, 21, and Luvuyo Ntsaba, 20, of Olievenhoutbosch.

  • They were charged with rape, kidnapping and three of robbery with aggravating circumstances after they were caught in a high-speed police chase with one of the rape-victims still inside the car-boot.

As the judgment was rolled to today, Sekole rubbed his cheek with his middle finger, writes Otto.

  • “He turned his head towards the investigating team who were sitting in the dock. While walking to the holding cells, he again made a "zap" sign at them”, writes the journalist in a report on page 3 of Pretoria News on September 10, 2009

Pleaded with the rapists to rather kill her…

Herman Scholtz of Beeld newspaper, who also covered the same trial, reports that one of the three victims -- kidnapped, and held captive for hours in the boot of her car -- had pleaded with the gang-rapists to rather kill her, that she’d prefer to die rather than be raped. They just ‘laughed at her’ after she was raped and she was so traumatised, she told the court, that she had dejectedly climbed back into the car boot herself after her deeply humiliating ordeal. Afterwards she tried to commit suicide, the court was told.

Regional magistrate Solomon Mkhabela said he was ‘taking the obvious trauma suffered by the three victims into consideration’. They told the court that they had all pleaded with the gang-rapists to rather take all their belongings, but to please not rape them. One even prayed for the soul of her rapist. After one of the Afrikaans women was raped, one of the rapists casually told her: “I raped you. Sorry’.

I had to rape you – I have a mother and sister to support…

Another accused told one victim – who he later claimed she had been his ‘intimidate friend Annemarie’ , that he had to rape her ‘because he had a mother and sister to support’.

One of the Afrikaans victims said that throughout her ordeal she was praying constantly – also for the soul of her rapist. He first played with her hair and nails, admiring them, then he took off her earrings and put them on his own earlobes. Then when she told him, ‘it’s not too late yet,’ pleading again not to rape her, he became very angry and vengeful – raping the white woman.

The gang drove around with the white women for more than a day – using their bank cards to draw cash, picking up other people while the women were in the car trunks for many long hours. Two of the women were dumped after the gang-rapes, the third woman was found inside her car after the police had chased and arrested the rape-gang in a high-speed car chase.

Among the forensic evidence were fingerprints and DNA of the accused. The women also identified the rapists in the courtroom – and one could even describe a tattoo worn by Ntsaba.
