Afrikaner smallholder murdered at Raslouw, Centurion

20090713 Nick Roets, 55, Raslouw smallholdings, Centurion

Roets Nick smallholder murdered July 14 2009 Pretoria Jul 15 2009  Beeld journalist Hilda Fourie writes that Mrs Elsabé Roets (55) was choking in her tears as she told how she found her husband Nick shot to death in broad daylight at their homestead of the Raslouw smallholdings in Centurion. His Boerbull dog was guarding his body, licking his face, she said. Mrs Roets had left at around 12:45 to make a delivery for their fruit-juice business, which they run from the smallholding.

She had been trying to phone him but got no reply. The couple were very security-conscious: they were also attacked in 2001 by an armed gang.

RoetsSmallholderMurderPretoriaNewsJuly152009FP Since that time, he’s always carried a handgun with him and the couple are keeping in constant touch when away from each other. She got very worried when she received no replies on their phones. When she returned about an hour later, she walked into their home and realised they had been in another attack. “We were attacked six years ago, and I got the same overwhelming feeling of dread and fear. I yelled: ‘Nick where are you, talk to me’ but then I saw him lying on the floor, on his back, with bloodstains on his clothes. I touched him. He was deadly-cold’… She said one of their seven dogs also was shot in a shoulder – the injured little animal was found cowering in the garage. “I can’t believe people could do this to my husband. He was here on his own, minding his own business. They could just have taken whatever they wanted, why did they have to kill him in this cruel way?” she asked. He was a ‘fat and friendly guy who smoked, cursed and loved his cup of tea. He was a big man with a tiny heart,’ she added. The murder-gang looted computers, two firearms, an old-fashioned hi-fi set and cash. Mr Roets died on the exact day and time his father Martin had also died of a heart attack 27 years ago, she said. He leaves three sons, Martin, 27, Jurgen, 24, and Nici, 22. Police captain Louise Reed said no-one was arrested. She told The Pretoria News that Mr Roets probably was shot with his own handgun. They are investigating. The Pretoria News also wrote that the community-security system which had been operating at the Raslouw smallholdings region, had recently collapsed. Local residents said armed attackers have been terrorising their smallholdings ever since.
