20090623 Kleinmond woman, two robbers killed in shootout

Jun 23 2009--  A young Kleinmond mom was critically injured together with two armed robbers who were holding her hostage, after gunshots were exchanged between her husband and the gunmen. The gunmen also were killed.

Police said the 34-year-old homeowner was ambushed when he returned home after dropping his children off at school and was accosted by two armed black men inside, holding his wife hostage.

Police captain Bernadine Steyn said the ambushed owner lured the men away from his wife to the master bedroom, using the promise that he'd give them money. Instead the homeowner got hold of his firearm there, and a gunfight ensued between the two sides which left the robbers dead. The wife was critically injured and died shortly after being admitted to hospital, Captain Steyn said. Their names will be released later. http://jv.news24.com/Beeld/Suid-Afrika/0,,3-975_2532312,00.html

Other murders and attacks on June 23:

The SA Press Association also reports today that yet another elderly couple have been attacked on a dairy farm. This follows shortly after the recent gruesome murders of several dairy farmers in the greater Pretoria area in which farmer Attie Van der Grijp, the Van Den Bosch couple of The Netherlands and several others, were murdered.  In today’s attack, the parents of farm owner Tracy Pemberton, Donald and Yvonne Gubb,  were attacked and robbed at the Pemberton dairy farm in Chrissiesmeer,  Mpumalanga police said. Mr Gubb was stabbed in the head, clubbed him over the head and then stabbed him in the chest. They also bashed Mrs Gubb over the head and fled after taking a mere three cellphones and a R50 note ($5). The couple were reported stable at hospital. Also today, a 28-year-old unnamed Muizenberg (Cape Town) woman was found murdered at her workplace. Captain Bernadine Steyn said police were alerted to the scene by an owner of a recruitment agency after he discovered the body with an open wound to the neck. Seemingly nothing was stolen. The agency owner found the woman’s body after dropping off his children at school. Investigating is Inspector Brian Oosthuizen on 021-787-900. And in KwaZulu-Natal, a gruesome murderous attack on a leading ANC-family caused the deaths of three members of the same family:  Agnes Ntombama Sikhakhane, 70, Mfaniseni Nkomo,18, and four-year-old Phamela Anele Sikhakhane were shot dead while sleeping in their house in the Entembisweni area, and Mbongeni Sikhakhane,49, was injured in the shooting while another family member managed to flee unscathed. Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said “the family was attacked by people who kicked their door open while they were sleeping on Monday night. "We found several 9mm expended cartridges on scene." Also today, supermarket workers in Durban have discovered the naked bodies of two unknown people, stabbed to death, inside supermarket trolleys at the entrance.

Also today, the Naidu family of Pietermaritzburg is lucky to be alive and unharmed after a weekend visit turned into a hellish ordeal when they were hijacked, kidnapped, and subjected to a high-speed chase. The family escaped unscathed when one of the hijackers drove the car into a ditch. When the car came to a standstill, the three hijackers ran off. Superintendent Henry Budhram said that Yugendra Naidu, 45, his wife and three children - aged 10, 16 and 20 years – were hijacked while relatives were visiting them in Balhambra Way, Northdale. The hijackers were pursued by police through a township and eventually crashed the car, with all three hijackers  fleeding with traffic cops in hot pursuit.

This is not the first time that Kleinmond, a bucolic ocean-side resort town in the Overberg region south-east of Cape Town, has been the scene of such ferocious criminal violence.

On August 4, 2008, much-loved pensioned community leaders Schalk and Marie van der Westhuizen, left, relatives of TV-personality Minkie van der Westhuizen, were shot dead in an armed attack at their home.
