Jun 11 2009 JOHANNESBURG.  Who says apartheid is dead in South Africa. Journalist Thinus Ferreira of Beeld newspaper reports that YFM, the radio station which ‘targets young blacks in greater Johannesburg’ for its prime audience, has to advertise for a ‘white’ disk jockey to satisfy the South African government’s ‘black economic empowerment’ laws.

The radio station, which is said to have some 1,4-million listeners, asks wannabe DJ’s “Are you White Enough for YFM?” in its advertisement for the job opening. More than one-third of South Africa’s white Afrikaans-speakers have become impoverished, unemployable and homeless because of this BEE-law. Even the best-educated Afrikaners are for the most part, now having to go overseas to find any employment only because of this law.

No tokenism

However, their programme manager Tumelo Diaho-Monaheng says any suggestion that any  appointment of the radio station’s only white employee could be in any way construed as ‘tokenism’. would be wrong: “We are looking for a red-hot white boy, aged 18 to 25. Should be bilingual in Afrikaans and English, and should be able to at least understand ‘a black language’, ’ said Diaho-Monaheng. There was no explanation as to why a ‘red-hot white girl’, wouldn’t be just as acceptable. Their offices are located in Rosebank near Johannesburg.

Diaho-Monaheng says “Red-hot White Boys’ may apply at http://ww.yfm.co.za One of the requirements for successful applicants would be to have to ‘name four songs which would be ideal for YFM’s musical choice.’
