Jun 22 2009 -- This is a portrait of the Van der Merwe family of Volksrust, who have now been left without their breadwinner. Johannes Marthinus, 37, right, with wife Maritza and two of their three children, Salomé (10) and JC (3), with newborn baby Miané not in this picture, was apparently shot dead by an armed Soweto hijacker  who was being pursued by police. The circumstances however still remain murky. The hijacker got away.

Elana Carstens of Beeld newspaper reports that Johannes, an operator for UCG Consulting – the underground coal to gasification project in Mpumalanga in partner ship with the national utility Eskom  --  was shot dead by an armed man who had hijacked a car in Soweto and had then run into his car on a rural Volksrust road, with a hijacked Renault Clio on Friday with a local police officer in hot pursuit.

The same Soweto hijacker also shot and injured the pursuing police inspector Willem van Zyl, 38 in the crash, said police captain Leonard Hlathi.

However the circumstances remain very murky. Police has asked an unknown woman who had called in details of the accident to the emergency services,  tocontact them urgently.

The hijacker got clean away.  Mr van der Merwe's funeral was scheduled for Wednesday 23 June 2009 from the Dutch Hervormd Church in Volksrust. Police has urged anyone who had witnessed the crash, to 'urgently contact police inspector Sonnyboy Moloko at 082 303 9879. http://jv.news24.com/Beeld/Suid-Afrika/0,,3-975_2532105,00.html  http://www.eskom.co.za/live/content.php?Item_ID=2931
